Channels

Used cookware, wind sounds on loop, dimensions variable, 2023–ongoing

Channels is a body of work about reclaiming female mediumship that has been rendered as impure, wicked, or dangerous in various contexts, both historically and contemporarily. Rather than defining mediumship as a specific religious activity, I hold it as ordinary and sacred registers of knowing, embodying, and relating to otherness. As secondhand household vessels that are temporarily reconfigured, these metal objects allude to both ritualistic and communicational mediating devices. From their hollow insides, ambient wind sounds accompany the vessels like carriers of unseen forces. Together, their reflective metal bodies and cavernous sounds evoke caregiving as mundane modes of mediumship that are both restrictive and emancipatory at once.
